Natural relief for painful periods

High Calcium & Magnesium (a.k.a. Cal-mag) foods, as well as good fats like nuts & avocados, will help with many female issues, as well as cramps. Cal-mag is a muscle relaxer & pain reliever.

Cal-mag in supplementation form is so safe that even pregnant & nursing moms can take it. I recommend Cal-mag liquid or powder that you mix into liquid, so it gets into the body faster. The higher quality kind can be found in health food stores or online. I recommend going to an applied kinesiologist so she/he can test how deficient you are in Cal-mag, in order to recommend the specific amount that your body needs. "Applied kinesiology (AK) is a form of diagnosis using muscle testing as a primary feedback mechanism to examine how a person's body is functioning." from www.appliedkinesiology.com

These suggestions are just a ‘band-aid’ until you can get to a natural healthcare professional who can help you find the root cause. For example a Chiropractor helped me. He also did muscle testing/applied kinesiology, suggested supplements etc. You can see multiple natural healthcare professional for relief of menstrual pain. For example a chiropractor adjustment may be easier or hold longer after a massage.

Cloth diapering Part 3 - Diaper Care

Reading online diaper care instructions may have you overwhelmed. When I saw long pages & websites online I thought it seemed a bit complicated. It's rare to find steps less than 5. I want this to be a quick & easy guide. It's not super detailed on purpose. A friend said their diapers came with pages & pages of instructions, sounded more like an overwhelming manual.

When looking into how to care for the particular diapers you bought, most companies have a page on their website or instructions come with the diapers... So my 'disclaimer' is read that first! This is what has worked for us:

1. Put diapers in dry bucket/pail [e.g. 5 gallon painter pail] till wash day. Wet bags are wonderful for traveling.
2. Wash hot, normal or gentle cycle; Use about 1/4-1/2 of the recommended amount of toxic free, baby safe detergent.
The companies want to sell more product so are going to suggest a large amount per load; so most people use too much detergent. I use liquid brands that say "free & clear".
3. Optional -Add ½ c. distilled white vinegar to rise cycle or Downy ball.
4. Dryer on low heat &/or line dry. Line dry covers.

5. Wool Dryer Balls are wonderful for cloth diapers! Always having them in your dryer is a way to achieve the benefits of fabric softener/dryer sheets without the toxicity.

How often should they be washed?

It depends on your child's age & type of diapers. We used to wash every 2-3 now ~4 days. I only did an immediate spray/rinse of the individual diaper till DD was a couple months, since then they go directly in the pail or washing machine. For those of you who gasped & are thinking gross (!) or but they will stain!! When I followed the advice of a friend to leave them unrinsed for days until wash day -They came out of the dryer stained. I was so upset at the lady who told me. But once I put them in the direct sun for several hours as advised, they were bright white again! Sunning diapers saves you time initially by avoiding immediate rinsing... Whether you choose to rinse or not - It makes then look brand new again =)

DONT

Use detergents with dyes or fragrances

Use softener - Fabric softeners & dryer sheets reduces absorbency by coating the fabric.

Use harsh chemicals - Bleach will shorten the life of your diapers, is cancer causing & can irritate babies skin.

Whitening additives will cause damage to the waterproofing. So don't use washing/backing soda or vinegar as mentioned above for diaper COVERS or diapers with covers attached.

Removing stains

I apply Peroxide or OxiClean spray, not powder, directly to stains before washing. Peroxide or OxiClean liquid or powder can also be added to the machine water.
If you use OxiClean too much or too often it will wear through fabric!! Line drying, clean, washed, but stained diapers, in direct sunlight is the best disinfectant and stain remover!

After 19 months of use the white diapers look a little worn, but don't look stained. That's with the above techniques, plus only 2 stain removing line dries in direct hot FL sun in almost 2 years! Since DD started solids I haven't had to sun the diapers for stains.

I have learned much and enjoyed our cloth diapering experience. Please share your story &/or questions. I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Gallbladder

This is a quick post to help several of you I've been emailing & talking to. So proud of the effort my dear friend put into treating her gallbladder attacks naturally, thus saving herself from surgery while bettering her overall health! Keep up the good work Michelle, you can be an encouragement to others!

I plan to come back & give more details on what I did personally to save my gallbladder. I also plan to give suggestions if you already have had removal surgery, to hopefully lessen the side effect of not having a gallbladder. SO check back again, become a follower, or get updates through email [see button right side of blog 'submit']

Dying To Have Known

documentary about the Gerson therapy was informative & interesting.

What is the Gerson therapy? I thought about putting a description here, but then that would spoil it! So NO SPOILER ALERT  =)

Mom is alive today by God’s grace! Yet He asks that we honor our bodies as a way of honoring Him. Each person's health journey & circumstances are different yet God says he will give wisdom to those who ask. Mom chose to use the Gerson therapy in her fight against cancer. Gerson therapy has allowed us to have more time with her! I am tearing up as I write how grateful I am to the Lord & Dr Gerson for the wealth of information that has helped my mom on her journey of health!

Dying To Have Known is about so much more then cancer! I recommend watching it even if you aren’t interested in cancer. Why? because there is a high probability of you or I getting cancer since 1 in every 2 people will get cancer in their lifetimes.

Certain Drs received the Nobel prize for research on TB. For Dr Gerson who found a CURE for TB, cancer & other diseases? Nothing… No prize, no recognition, quite the opposite.

Reminds me of Dr Ignaz Semmelweis “he noticed that the ward run by midwives had a much lower death rate than a ward run by doctors. …his claim that the doctors were doing a worse job than the midwives led to him being shunned by his colleagues and dismissed from his position…. He died in 1865 in a mental institution, widely regarded as a madman, and never lived to see the theory that tiny particles, invisible to the naked eye, could carry infectious disease from person to person.” From The work of Semmelweis

Around 57min. into Dying To Have Known it mentions parents can be jailed for choosing alternative cancer therapy for their children. It’s chemo/radiation for them or you loose your children &/or your freedom! For more on this specific subject watch the documentary Cut Poison Burn

Watch Dying To Have Known FREE to find out the cure for cancer & many other diseases.

A must see:

Vanishing Honeybees

Bees are vanishing "how does it impact America's food supply? This documentary explores how the deaths of millions of bees threaten the livelihoods of many beekeepers and the nation's crops." [quote from Netflix movie description of Colony]

We just watched Colony on Netflix tonight. Interesting. How many of you have seen it? What did you learn?

Vanishing of the BeesQueen of the Sun are also on our list to watch. Here are the trailers:

Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us?

I feel I have a better understanding of what honeybees do. How they not only effect our food supply but so much more. Now I want to plant a garden for bees or become a hobby beekeeper! It's not something that I'll be doing anytime soon, but maybe someday.

I recommend Vanishing of the Bees for family movie night. Homeschoolers consider watching these documentaries for health &/or science. We can learn so much from what the Lord has placed around us. God made the fascinating honeybees that I now have a new found interest in!

Since I've watched all 3 of these documentaries, I recommend if you can only watch one, learn from Vanishing of the Bees. At the end of Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us? they give a list of what you can do.

Beautiful photos of birth ecstasy

Ecstasy = An overwhelming feeling of great happiness or joyful excitement.
Description of this picture from Improving Birth on facebook
"I was able to go back to my first love yesterday and continue to be inspired as this mama climbed her mountain and victoriously greeted her baby during her vaginal birth after cesarean."

all picture from Improving Birth on facebook

In general, I don’t see these kinds of pictures, this joy, this birth emotion in medicated births. I didn’t say hospital ‘cause you can still have birth ecstasy in an all natural hosp. birth =) Of course there are always exceptions. Notice I did say ‘in general’. If you have a medicated birth picture that looks like these that you’d be willing for me to post please share!

Just because you have a natural birth doesn't mean your face will look like these ladies. It doesn’t guarantee that you will feel birth ecstasy. I believe I experienced birth shock (the emotional, not physical kind) though in no way did I feel like it was a traumatic birth. Maybe “birth surprise” is a better description at least in my case. So my face did not look like those above. It was surreal. When my milk came in around 3 days I got overwhelming feelings of emotion and joy. I sobbed like I thought I would have immediately after our daughter was born. Please, don’t misunderstand me, I loved her the 1st three days and was very excited, just didn’t get the birth ecstasy till later!

I'm crying just watching the trailers; I better bring a tissue box to the theater!
My heart goes out to woman struggling with the decisions surrounding a crisis pregnancy. I volunteered at a CPC (crisis pregnancy center) for years. Ever since I was a little girl I have longed to adopt children! That desire only grows with time. So stories like this make me pray... and cry... and pray more! I pray that many who watch October Baby will find healing!

Folic acid vs Folate

Clearly, it’s important to get adequate amounts of folate in the diet; but folic acid, which is the supplement form found in many fortified foods, and in multi-vitamins and prenatal vitamins, is an entirely different beast. Simply put, it is not a good idea to supplement with folic acid:

 1. A Norwegian study published last month found that heart-disease patients whose diets included folic acid fortification and supplementation were 43% more likely to die of cancer.

 2. Another study found that while whole-food folate consumption was not associated with any increased risks, folic acid supplementation increased breast cancer risk by 32%.

 3. Equally alarming is the study that found that folic acid supplementation by pregnant women increases the risk of childhood asthma by 26%.

4. Still other studies have linked folic acid supplementation to prostate and colorectal cancers.

Eat foods high in folate and take Juice Plus with naturally occurring God made folate from plant sources!!! Anyone who wants the pdf explaining this, with the list of studies mentioned above, can email me for it.

Foods that are naturally good sources of folate include many beans and vegetables and some fruits:

Black-eyed peas
Lentils
Okra
Kidney beans
Great Northern beans
Broccoli
Iceberg lettuce
Beets
Lima beans

May is Postpartum Mood Awareness month

Kaleen Richards CNM (midwife), ARNP, speaks about the difference between postpartum blues vs postpartum depression, risk factors and much more in this informative talk!

Some highlights from the above video:

What to watch for AFTER the 1st week:

~ Crying every day &/or all day long

~ Not responding to the baby

~ Not caring for yourself or the baby
(This means long term. It's expected that some days your so tired you'd rather sleep in than take a shower; especially with in the 1st 6 weeks. Also there is a difference if you desire to take care of your self & the baby, but feel physically that you can't. As opposed to physically being able to perform those takes yet avoiding, denying or ignoring them. For example, weakness, extreme fatigue, short of breath, not having the stamina you used to, can be signs of low iron or anemia. Have your midwife or Dr check your iron levels. Increase iron rich veggies in your diet. Try green smoothies and check out my link list Juicing! There are natural supplements that are not only safe for, but also highly recommended when nursing such as Chlorophyll and Floradix)

Moms that are induced with pitocin &/or have a C-section have an increased risk of postpartum depression. I also want to bring awareness that often times fathers struggle with postpartum depression as well.

I like what she says "Dad it's your job to call me" if you see these signs of depression ('cause most likely he'll find it easier to call as woman often feel embarrassed to admit they are struggling).

Here are some natural remedies that can help with mild symptoms till you can get into see your midwife or Dr., have some blood work done and discuss it further with them. This list doesn't fix the root cause (e.g. hormone imbalance, lack of support etc)

Isotonix Calcium Plus
Natural Calm Plus Calcium
Rescue Remedy

I don't know of a mom's group in my area, so I started one! If you live near me, private message me for detail. We'd love to see you there =)

FDA admits on its website that thimerosal is still in vaccines
"While the use of mercury-containing preservatives has declined in recent years with the development of new products formulated with alternative or no preservatives, thimerosal has been used in some immune globulin preparations, anti-venins, skin test antigens, and ophthalmic and nasal products, in addition to certain vaccines," writes the FDA on itsThimerosal in Vaccines page (http://www.fda.gov ). from Natural News

Acid Reflux in Newborns

My daughter had acid reflux. Calling a lactation consultant made a difference overnight (literally) we went from DAILY choking, projectile vomiting, hours of nursing, to a rare projectile vomit when I ate something I shouldn't have.

If this is something you think your little one might have then your 1st priority should be to call a lactation consultant &/or go to a LLL meeting (even if you find these tips helpful, because each baby is different. Also it will help you emotionally. I just felt better after talking on the phone with the lactation consultant, even though nothing had changed yet)

Watching what you eat. I ate a lot fresh fruit the 1st several days, thinking I was being so healthy. It turned out they were the types of fruit that increase reflux.

Foods to avoid:
Gassy, acidic, diary, caffeine...
More specifically
Asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, strawberries, citrus, ice-cream, milk
(cheese & eggs for some babies)

Record a diet diary along with babies reactions/symptoms for at least a week. With that info you can begin an elimination diet; meaning completely stop eating the trigger foods, till you see improvement. What I was told is that babies can react to a food through nursing, in general within 2-12 hours and it can stay in their systems for 2 weeks or more.

Do not cradle hold but prop baby up during feedings. Then hold them in an upright position or prop them on a boppy, carseat or swing after.

Probiotics - liquid

Gripe water or Mylicon or enzymes

Homeopathic colic tabs

Acid Reflux=  Hazelwood -OR- Hazelwood w/Baltic Amber Beads from Hazelaid

Tips for non-nursing babies
with acid reflux

Special formulas still may have cows milk or high allergens like corn. I read the ingredients to some special formulas that they are probably charging you an arm & a leg for while you still have a crying baby. This is what I read: corn, corn, treated cows milk, more corn!! Keep in mind, much of this corn has been genetically modified which doesn't agree with adults digestion, let alone babies! Maybe baby is saying "Please mommy no more CORN!"

"Casein hydrolysate formula... is made of cow's milk that has been treated... But there isn't enough research to say whether replacing standard cow's milk formula with casein hydrolysate formula will help your baby's colic. [2] [8]"

You are the best mom for Your baby! In other words YOU have the best mom instincts for your baby! If your baby appears to still be in pain, crying etc then the formula you are currently using may be the culprit no matter what the bottle/can or ads says!

I recommend trying different options such as homemade baby formula or donor milkHere is an other recipe: Goat's Milk baby formula from Dr Sears

Babywearing & Chiropractic care can help fussy babies no matter what they are being fed!

Other ideas: Bicycling baby's legs, clockwise abdominal massage, legs to chest (these three are more for a gassy baby so be gentle & not after a feeding!)

I also had a fast/forceful letdown which compounded the reflux. Here are some tips and positions combined with tips mentioned above, stopped our daughters sputtering & chocking while nursing.

These are the things that helped us:

Lie down or "recline back so that baby is above and tummy-to-tummy with mom. See this information on upright nursing positions." from http://kellymom.com/health/baby-health/reflux/

Breastfeeding where both of you are sitting up/monkey position. I would prop her up on a boppy when nursing side lying.
