The "Emergency" C-Section

"In the United States more than one million women, 1 in 3, give birth by cesarean every year..." from VBAC.com
"After a cesarean, most women have two choices for future births: a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) or a repeat cesarean section (RCS). There is a lot of misinformation about these two options." from VBAC facts

So here are some websites to help clear up these misunderstandings & to help you become more informed:

Changing your food habits? Read this 1st

Here is a list I typed up to help a friend who is changing to what is called clean eating, meaning no processed foods. If you want more info specifically on clean eating look under the link list to the right hand side of the pg. under “Clean Eating” If you already eat clean, have recipes or suggestions or web links Please email me or leave a comment.

1 Just remember KISS = Keep it simple silly!!!
Don’t get overwhelmed. Meaning make one change at a time. Example: Make a menu for one day so you can prepare & shop properly for those meals. One day, that’s all you have to think about! Then try a wk-end, until you find yourself going longer & longer.

I remember when I was cutting out dairy I thought forlornly “this is the last ice-cream cone I’m ever going to have EVER again!” Don’t say things like “ever again” or “never”. By the way, there is non dairy ice-cream you can find in health food stores. I didn’t know this at the time of my above thought.

2 It going to take time. One phase at a time
I’ve been on this health conscious, eating better, journey for over 10 yrs now & I’m still learning. Still room for improvement!

3 Eat real/whole foods!
As much raw as possible!! Why do you need a lot of recipes? Why do you feel the need to cook? It will save you time & energy (w/a reduced electric bill) if you don’t! What we do is cook only the bare necessities. Examples: homemade pizza we melt the cheese then add raw toppings… we cook pasta sauce then add raw veggies, breakfast burritos where we add raw veggies to the fried onions & eggs.

4 Your palette will change over time.
The time line will be different for everyone, depending on how disciplined you are. It’s better to work with your kids palette’s now while they’re young!
Andrew’s ideas: Concentrate on fruits & veggies, spending the majority of your food budget on the fruits & veggies so you won’t be tempted to spend it on boxed stuff.

I respect Mom’s wisdom & resourcefulness for feeding 5 people on one income (including a teenage son) Mom was amazing in her managing the meals & stretching the food out skills. If you know my mom, feel free to call her for money saving & health tips!!!

Get plenty of Vit. D when trying to conceive

Benefits Of Vitamin D
Healthy Living Articles Health.com

By Erica Kain
With all of the recent news stories about the potential benefits of Vitamin D—namely strong teeth and bones, a reduced risk of cancer, and an improved mood—it should come as no surprise that the vitamin may be beneficial to pregnant women.

But I was blown away by a recent study that showed a connection between IVF success rates and Vitamin D.

Could upping my intake really help me conceive?

The study found that women with a higher vitamin D level in their serum and follicular fluid (the fluid in a developing ovarian follicle) are “significantly more likely to achieve clinical pregnancy” following an IVF-embryo transfer.

Lubna Pal, MBBS, an author of the study and director of the program for polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) at the Yale Fertility Center, cautions that we don’t have enough data to definitively support the connection. However, she theorizes that Vitamin D affects the endometrium (the lining of the uterus), and research suggests that it may stimulate suppressor Th2 cells, which help the body maintain a pregnancy.

The potential correlation between Vitamin D deficiency and failed IVF cycles is a revelation that merits further study, and Dr. Pal says this may help explain why ethnic minorities have lower success rates in IVF. In particular, African American patients were found to have lower IVF success rates, and likewise, they were found to have lower levels of vitamin D. This particular deficiency is a well-known phenomenon, since people with darker skin who live far from the equator are particularly at risk for Vitamin D deficiency.

In the meantime, Dr. Pal warned that women of color aren’t the only ones that need to have their Vitamin D levels checked. According to her, 70-80% of the population are deficient in Vitamin D (which is a shame because there are so many non-skeletal benefits to the vitamin only now being discovered). She advises women to get plenty of Vitamin D when trying to conceive, and once they do conceive, use vitamin D to avert preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.

Sleep more - Docs orders!

Lack of sleep linked to early death: study

Wed May 5, 9:44 am ET
LONDON (AFP) – People who get less than six hours sleep per night have an increased risk of dying prematurely, researchers said on Wednesday.

Those who slumbered for less than that amount of time were 12 percent more likely to die early, though researchers also found a link between sleeping more than nine hours and premature death.

"If you sleep little, you can develop diabetes, obesity, hypertension and high cholesterol," Francesco Cappuccio, who led research on the subject at Britain's University of Warwick, told AFP.

The study, conducted with the Federico II University in Naples, Italy, aggregated decade-long studies from around the world involving more than 1.3 million people and found "unequivocal evidence of the direct link" between lack of sleep and premature death.

"We think that the relation between little sleep and illness is due to a series of hormonal and metabolical mechanisms," Cappuccio said.

The findings of the study were published in the Sleep journal.

Cappuccio believes the duration of sleep is a public health issue and should be considered as a behavioural risk factor by doctors.

"Society pushes us to sleep less and less," Cappuccio said, adding that about 20 percent of the population in the United States and Britain sleeps less than five hours.

Sleeping less than six hours is "more common amongst full-time workers, suggesting that it may be due to societal pressures for longer working hours and more shift work"

The study also found a link between sleeping more than nine hours per night and premature death, but Cappuccio said oversleeping is more likely to be an effect of illness, rather than a cause.

"Doctors never ask how much one sleeps, but that could be an indicator that something is wrong," said Cappuccio, who heads the Sleep, Health and Society Programme at the University of Warwick.

Research showed no adverse effects for those sleeping between six and eight hours per day.

Dunstan Baby Language

Explaining how to decode your baby’s cues & cries

The Dunstan Baby Language

For millions of sleep-deprived mothers around the world, this woman's findings could be a miracle! Priscilla Dunstan, a mom from Australia with a special gift, says she's unlocked the secret language of babies.

When Priscilla was a toddler, her parents discovered she had a photographic memory for sound. At age 4, she could hear a Mozart concert on the piano and play it back note for note.

That mysterious second language took on an astounding new meaning when Priscilla became a mother to her baby, Tom.

After testing her baby language theory on more than 1,000 infants around the world, Priscilla says there are five words that all babies 0–3 months old say—regardless of race and culture:
Neh="I'm hungry"
Owh="I'm sleepy"
Heh="I'm experiencing discomfort"
Eair="I have lower gas"
Eh="I need to burp"
Those "words" are actually sound reflexes, Priscilla says. "Babies all around the world have the same reflexes, and they therefore make the same sounds," she says. If parents don't respond to those reflexes, Priscilla says the baby will eventually stop using them.

Priscilla recommends that parents listen for those words in a baby's pre-cry before they start crying hysterically. She says there is no one sound that's harder to hear than others because it varies by individual. She also says some babies use some words more than others.

Gardasil

" Gardasil, the cervical cancer vaccine recommended for girls as young as 12 years old, is causing side effects ranging from seizures and numbness to dizzy spells, fainting and paralysis.

More than 17 girls a week in Australia have experienced such reactions after receiving the vaccination, but the country’s Department of Health and Aging refuses to release their details.

Further, as of November 30, 2007, 496 adverse reaction reports were filed with Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA). Of them, 468 had the cervical cancer vaccine as the sole suspected cause.

In the United States, up to 1,700 women have reported adverse reactions from Gardasil, including at least seven deaths.

To date, more than 10 million doses of Gardasil have been distributed worldwide.

TGA noted that the safety of Gardasil was being monitored by officials in Australia and overseas, and that the adverse reactions are consistent with those expected from any vaccine. "

THE RAW MILK MOVEMENT

"...Last October, Canadian farmer Michael Schmidt asked for the maximum possible sentence after he was found in contempt of court for ignoring an order to stop selling raw milk. The judge didn’t give him jail time, saying he didn’t want to make him a martyr to the cause..." Read rest of article at:

Here is what people on Facebook are saying...

"I remember my Dr. I went to growing up always told us that there was poop in milk."
"My pediatrician was a staunch anti-milk person claiming it was entirely detrimental and every other mammal had the good sense to stop drinking milk after weening... especially another mammal's milk!"
"Yeah, that is how my doc believed. It makes sense to me. I do think if you do consume dairy products they should be raw though."

"First of all, please understand that I do not recommend drinking pasteurized milk of any kind – ever. Because once milk has been pasteurized it’s more or less “dead,” and offers little in terms of real nutritional value to anyone, whether you show signs of intolerance to the milk or not.

How to Find Truly Healthy Milk
Depending on where you live, A2 milk may not be that hard to find. In fact, herds in much of Asia, Africa, and parts of Southern Europe still produce primarily A2 milk.

If you live in the United States, New Zealand, Australia or other areas of Europe, however, you’ll need to look a bit harder since the majority of cattle in these areas are A1 breeds.

As you know, I advocate getting your raw milk from a local dairy farmer that raises cattle organically, letting his livestock graze on fresh grasses. So to ensure the milk you’re getting is A2 milk -- the type that has not been associated with illness and instead appears to have numerous health benefits – you’d just have to ask what kind of breed he raises. (Remember, A2 breeds include Jersey, Guernsey, Asian and African cows.)

Buying retail (in those states where raw milk sale is legal) would require just a little more work, since you’d have to get the contact information of the milk supplier and then call or write them to find out what breeds are used.

Fortunately, grass-fed, raw milk almost always comes from small dairy farms that do not co-mingle their milk with milk from other farms, so this makes ensuring you’re buying A2 milk quite a bit easier.

You can start you search for raw milk retailers in the US by going to the RealMilk web site.

http://www.organicpastures.com/ also has a store locator for California.

(You can use the following hyperlinks to find out the legal status of raw milk in the U.S. state or country where you live.)

Yet another option is raw goat- and sheep’s milk, as neither of them contains the harmful BCM-7."
