Sleep more - Docs orders!

Lack of sleep linked to early death: study

Wed May 5, 9:44 am ET
LONDON (AFP) – People who get less than six hours sleep per night have an increased risk of dying prematurely, researchers said on Wednesday.

Those who slumbered for less than that amount of time were 12 percent more likely to die early, though researchers also found a link between sleeping more than nine hours and premature death.

"If you sleep little, you can develop diabetes, obesity, hypertension and high cholesterol," Francesco Cappuccio, who led research on the subject at Britain's University of Warwick, told AFP.

The study, conducted with the Federico II University in Naples, Italy, aggregated decade-long studies from around the world involving more than 1.3 million people and found "unequivocal evidence of the direct link" between lack of sleep and premature death.

"We think that the relation between little sleep and illness is due to a series of hormonal and metabolical mechanisms," Cappuccio said.

The findings of the study were published in the Sleep journal.

Cappuccio believes the duration of sleep is a public health issue and should be considered as a behavioural risk factor by doctors.

"Society pushes us to sleep less and less," Cappuccio said, adding that about 20 percent of the population in the United States and Britain sleeps less than five hours.

Sleeping less than six hours is "more common amongst full-time workers, suggesting that it may be due to societal pressures for longer working hours and more shift work"

The study also found a link between sleeping more than nine hours per night and premature death, but Cappuccio said oversleeping is more likely to be an effect of illness, rather than a cause.

"Doctors never ask how much one sleeps, but that could be an indicator that something is wrong," said Cappuccio, who heads the Sleep, Health and Society Programme at the University of Warwick.

Research showed no adverse effects for those sleeping between six and eight hours per day.

Dunstan Baby Language

Explaining how to decode your baby’s cues & cries

The Dunstan Baby Language

For millions of sleep-deprived mothers around the world, this woman's findings could be a miracle! Priscilla Dunstan, a mom from Australia with a special gift, says she's unlocked the secret language of babies.

When Priscilla was a toddler, her parents discovered she had a photographic memory for sound. At age 4, she could hear a Mozart concert on the piano and play it back note for note.

That mysterious second language took on an astounding new meaning when Priscilla became a mother to her baby, Tom.

After testing her baby language theory on more than 1,000 infants around the world, Priscilla says there are five words that all babies 0–3 months old say—regardless of race and culture:
Neh="I'm hungry"
Owh="I'm sleepy"
Heh="I'm experiencing discomfort"
Eair="I have lower gas"
Eh="I need to burp"
Those "words" are actually sound reflexes, Priscilla says. "Babies all around the world have the same reflexes, and they therefore make the same sounds," she says. If parents don't respond to those reflexes, Priscilla says the baby will eventually stop using them.

Priscilla recommends that parents listen for those words in a baby's pre-cry before they start crying hysterically. She says there is no one sound that's harder to hear than others because it varies by individual. She also says some babies use some words more than others.

Gardasil

" Gardasil, the cervical cancer vaccine recommended for girls as young as 12 years old, is causing side effects ranging from seizures and numbness to dizzy spells, fainting and paralysis.

More than 17 girls a week in Australia have experienced such reactions after receiving the vaccination, but the country’s Department of Health and Aging refuses to release their details.

Further, as of November 30, 2007, 496 adverse reaction reports were filed with Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA). Of them, 468 had the cervical cancer vaccine as the sole suspected cause.

In the United States, up to 1,700 women have reported adverse reactions from Gardasil, including at least seven deaths.

To date, more than 10 million doses of Gardasil have been distributed worldwide.

TGA noted that the safety of Gardasil was being monitored by officials in Australia and overseas, and that the adverse reactions are consistent with those expected from any vaccine. "

THE RAW MILK MOVEMENT

"...Last October, Canadian farmer Michael Schmidt asked for the maximum possible sentence after he was found in contempt of court for ignoring an order to stop selling raw milk. The judge didn’t give him jail time, saying he didn’t want to make him a martyr to the cause..." Read rest of article at:

Here is what people on Facebook are saying...

"I remember my Dr. I went to growing up always told us that there was poop in milk."
"My pediatrician was a staunch anti-milk person claiming it was entirely detrimental and every other mammal had the good sense to stop drinking milk after weening... especially another mammal's milk!"
"Yeah, that is how my doc believed. It makes sense to me. I do think if you do consume dairy products they should be raw though."

"First of all, please understand that I do not recommend drinking pasteurized milk of any kind – ever. Because once milk has been pasteurized it’s more or less “dead,” and offers little in terms of real nutritional value to anyone, whether you show signs of intolerance to the milk or not.

How to Find Truly Healthy Milk
Depending on where you live, A2 milk may not be that hard to find. In fact, herds in much of Asia, Africa, and parts of Southern Europe still produce primarily A2 milk.

If you live in the United States, New Zealand, Australia or other areas of Europe, however, you’ll need to look a bit harder since the majority of cattle in these areas are A1 breeds.

As you know, I advocate getting your raw milk from a local dairy farmer that raises cattle organically, letting his livestock graze on fresh grasses. So to ensure the milk you’re getting is A2 milk -- the type that has not been associated with illness and instead appears to have numerous health benefits – you’d just have to ask what kind of breed he raises. (Remember, A2 breeds include Jersey, Guernsey, Asian and African cows.)

Buying retail (in those states where raw milk sale is legal) would require just a little more work, since you’d have to get the contact information of the milk supplier and then call or write them to find out what breeds are used.

Fortunately, grass-fed, raw milk almost always comes from small dairy farms that do not co-mingle their milk with milk from other farms, so this makes ensuring you’re buying A2 milk quite a bit easier.

You can start you search for raw milk retailers in the US by going to the RealMilk web site.

http://www.organicpastures.com/ also has a store locator for California.

(You can use the following hyperlinks to find out the legal status of raw milk in the U.S. state or country where you live.)

Yet another option is raw goat- and sheep’s milk, as neither of them contains the harmful BCM-7."

Florida Midwifery

August 4, 2009 by midwiferobyn

The State of Florida is a great place for moms looking for a home birth midwife. Florida has established laws and regulations that govern midwifery, making it legal. During my years as a Licensed Midwife I am often asked questions like, what is the difference between midwives, what type of training do midwives have, and how do all these acronyms affect my choices in Florida? So let me elaborate on paths to midwifery to help you understand all those letters behind our names!

There are several types of Midwives through out the nation. There are Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM), Licensed Midwives (LM), Certified Professional Midwives (CPM) and Lay midwives. In the State of Florida only two types of Midwives are legal to practice, CNM’s and LM’s. This is where it all gets a bit interesting! In Florida, in order to be a LM, you must also become a CPM, even though you couldn’t be a CPM by itself in Florida. Let me explain further.

Certified Nurse Midwives have gone through a educational process that includes becoming an RN, and then continuing on through a Master’s degree program in Nursing, with a focus on Midwifery. This program can take up to 6 years or longer to complete. The focus of Nurse Midwifery is in primary care, and not just midwifery. They are not independent practitioners and need to have physician oversight. However, they do have additional privileges that other midwives do not, such as the ability to write prescriptions, and deliver babies in the hospital. They are legal in all 50 states. They may also be known as Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners or ANRP’s depending on their education path. There are very few, if any CNM’s that are currently attending homebirths in Florida. There are many that are Birth Center Midwives. The vast majority practice in the hospital setting.

Licensed Midwives are also required to complete an education process to become licensed by the State of Florida. Licensed Midwifery is not legal in all 50 states. Florida LM’s are legal, independent practitioners and do not require physician oversight. They are able to care for low risk pregnant moms only. LM’s do not have prescription privileges and while they are legally allowed to deliver babies in a hospital, no hospital uses LM’s, and most prefer homebirth to hospital practice.

The road to becoming a licensed midwife requires a 3 year educational process. This 3 year program is comprehensive and includes hard sciences like biology, embryology and soft sciences like psychology. It of course also covers extended course work in midwifery and newborn care. LM students are required to be skilled in determining risk status, normal pregnancy, labor & delivery, postpartum and newborn care. They are well versed in complication management as well. During their 3 years in school they will observe 25 births out of the hospital, and then deliver 50 babies under the supervision of a Licensed Midwife. Once a LM student has graduated, they are required to take the state test, this is where that CPM credential comes in to play.

The North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) is an international certification agency whose mission is to establish and administer certification for the credential “Certified Professional Midwife” (CPM). CPM certification validates entry-level knowledge, skills, and experience vital to responsible midwifery practice.

Many States, including Florida, use this as their licensure exam. So in addition to meeting the minimum Florida requirements for licensure, you must also meet the NARM national requirements. So each midwife in Florida is an LM, CPM. ( ahhh ..So that’s what all those initials are!) In order to maintain these, each midwife must also have a minimum number of continuing education credits each year. Some midwives also have extra training, such as being an EMT or other certification that add to the value of their services. All licensed and certified midwives are required to have certification in CPR and Neo Natal Resuscitation.

Lay midwives are those women who have no formal training, but have apprenticed with experienced midwives. These ladies gain their education through self study and observation, and then by doing. Often they become CPM’s, through NARM, although some do not and practice without a formal license in those states where that is legal. This type of midwifery is not legal in Florida.

When choosing a midwife it is important to understand the type of midwife and her training. You can feel confident that whether you choose a CNM or a Florida Licensed Midwife you are in very capable and trained hands to guide you through your journey in childbirth.

Strawberries help fight bad cholesterol

glitter-graphics.com

Add strawberries to the growing list of super foods.

A 2.5-year-long study by the University of Toronto found that the
antioxidants in strawberries helped manage bad cholesterol, according
to a news release.

The study, conducted by Dr. David J.A. Jenkins, backs existing
evidence that touts strawberries as a nutrient-rich foods. It showed
that the antioxidants in strawberries can improve and maintain the
effectiveness of cholesterol-lowering diets.

According to a U.S. Department of Agriculture study, strawberries rank
third in antioxidants compared with other fresh fruits and
vegetables.

The berries also improved the taste of the cholesterol-lowering diet,
which can affect whether people will stick with an eating plan.

Confessions of an Rx Drug Pusher

It is heartbreaking to see someone you love go through this! Keep in mind the more informed you are , the more you can help them with informed choices regarding healthcare.

Gwen Olsen

Scary! I knew this happened to children but I guess I didn’t know to what extent. The children’s ages is what shocked me the most!

"100,000 Americans die each year from their prescriptions" None of these deaths are from overdoes, or a mistake by a Dr, pharmacist or the patient themselves... Death came only as a consequence of taking the drug as directed. from
